A man is in critical condition after the NYPD says a package exploded in Queens.

The explosion happened around 4:15 p.m. Friday on the porch of 145-23 222nd Street in Springfield Gardens.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce says the cylindrical package exploded as soon as the victim opened it.

The 72-year-old victim suffered second- and third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body, according to police. He is in critical condition at Nassau Medical Center.

Boyce says the victim owns the home but does not live in it. He rents it out to two other people, according to Boyce.
