Seven people, including five children, escaped safely from a burning building in Bedford-Stuyvesant early yesterday, fire officials said.
The 1 a.m. blaze at 946 Herkimer St., a three-story frame building near Ralph Ave., began in the basement and sent heavy smoke billowing through the building, officials said.
While most of the victims managed to escape down the staircase, one was removed by firefighters using a portable ladder. One little boy managed to get back inside and save his dog, officials said.
Three children and an adult were taken to Brookdale University Hospital and a fifth person was taken to Interfaith Medical Center, fire officials said.
All the injuries were smoke-related and considered minor, officials said.
Fire marshals are investigating the blaze, which began in the basement, the FDNY said.
