Indictments May Be Close In Deutsche Bank Fire

NY 1

Almost a year after two firefighters died battling a fire in the Deutsche Bank building, a grand jury may be close to handing out indictments.

There's word criminal charges could be handed down against city agencies and possibly even the city itself.

The Daily News says a grand jury has been meeting since last November to determine if anyone is criminally responsible for the deaths resulting from the fire last August at the contaminated building near the World Trade Center site.

The paper says city officials and private contractors working to dismantle the building could be hit with charges as early as next month.

A key issue is whether the tower was inspected properly by the Fire Department and the Department of Buildings.

After the fire, investigators found sealed exits, a broken standpipe and blocked entryways.

Firefighters Robert Beddia and Joseph Graffagnino were killed.

Investigators have said the fire was started by a cigarette.
