Statement of Steve Cassidy, UFA President on the Passing of Retired IAFF General Secretary-Treasurer Vincent J. Bollon
On behalf of the UFA Executive Board and all New York City Firefighters our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Vincent J. Bollon, on his passing.
He was a union leader advocating for firefighters for over 40 years, including 21 years of service to the IAFF in Washington, D.C. His legacy will be as a man who dedicated his life to the firefighters he served shoulder-to-shoulder with, starting as a member of Ladder 31 in the Bronx, service as a UFA delegate and as UFA Recording-Secretary during the heart of the 1970's New York City fiscal crisis.
As a member of the FDNY Vinny was well regarded among fellow firefighters, earning three individual citations and together with the members of Ladder 31, earned several unit citations for outstanding courage, bravery and rescues.
Upon his retirement from the FDNY in 1988 he was elected IAFF General Secretary-Treasurer, serving until last year. Following the 9-11 attacks Vinny together with IAFF President Harold Shaitberger played a key role in raising $160 million to help the families of union members who died and were left devastated by the attacks on our nation. This along with his pivotal role to improve the safety and conditions of firefighters and professional firefighting over the last half-century will not be forgotten.
